No matter who wins the actual football game, Super Bowl Sunday is really about getting together with family and friends to place bets and eat junk food.
“I threw the party this year and made everyone bring a dish to pass and we all bet on which company would have the best commercials,” Trystyn McCarthy of Wixom said.
This year’s Super Bowl found the New England Patriots handing their perfect season to the New York Giants. Though the odds favored Tom Brady and the Patriots, it seemed that more people were rooting for the underdog with more heart, Eli Manning and the Giants.
“Of course I wanted the Giants to win, I love New York and I also wanted to see the Manning family to get two Super Bowl wins in a row,” McCarthy said, referring to Eli’s brother Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts, who won the NFL championship in 2006.
The commercials that run during the Super Bowl are what draw most people to watching the game.
“I always look forward to the Budweiser commercials, but this year the Doritos commercials were my favorite,” Andrew Tisdale from Lansing said.
According to www.superbowl-ads.com, a 30-second commercial cost companies $2.7 million on average. That same time slot 10 years ago would have cost $1.3 million.
This year’s game also brought a classic American band, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers to excite fans during the halftime show.
Expensive commercials and a well-matched football gave everyone an excuse to bet on the team they love and stuff their face with the food they only eat for special occasions, party occasions.
“The best Super Bowl food is of course pizza, chips and salsa, cookies and beer,” Jamie Kenny of Bruce Township said.
No matter what team you bet on you’ll find a party that will accept you, feed you and let you crash on their couch if the night’s menu is too harsh.
