Central Michigan University and Mid Michigan Community College both canceled all classes Wednesday, effective after 4 p.m., due to a snowstorm.
According to the National Weather Service, about eight inches of snow fell on the mid-Michigan area overnight, making roadways treacherous, and leaving people and cars snowed in.
For CMU this was the third time this year classes have had to be delayed or cancelled because of the weather. It was the first time MMCC has canceled classes all year.
“I wish I could say I was getting sick of the snow days,” said Mason Freshman Ariel Wiborn. “But I like being able to hang out with my roommates all day and not have to go anywhere.”
Other students, like Weidman senior Brenda Webber, aren’t so happy with the snow days. “Either way I have a ton of studying to do,” she said. “All that changes is whether I do it at home, or on campus.”
On Thursday morning, CMU students woke to find that classes were delayed until noon, and then delayed again until 2 p.m. MMCC students were not so lucky. MMCC did not cancel or delay class on Thursday, despite being a commuter college, to the disappointment of some students.
“I take mostly night classes,” explained MMCC student Melinda Earl. “I take them on the Harrison campus, so I have about a half hour of driving. I’ve been really irritated lately about how they haven’t been canceling classes, because the weather is so bad. I haven’t had an accident yet, but I think I’ve just been lucky.”
“I can’t believe they made us have classes [Thursday],” said student Curtis Nelson. “The roads were terrible. My neighbor got stuck in her driveway; she couldn’t even make it to the road. They need to just let people do the safe thing and stay home. If CMU closes school and most of their students are on campus, I think Mid should do the same thing.”
