Beal City schools cancel classes

Erin Hillard

Beal City schools will be closed Thursday due to the weather.

Snowfall began around noon causing dangerous accumulations and treacherous roads. The national weather service is predicting a total of 4 more inches of snow overnight, with the most snow happening before 1 a.m.

The weather Wednesday caused cancellations of many programs at Beal City, including practices, and the Isabella County Talent Show. The junior high boys' Basketball against Manton was also canceled.

This is not the first time this semester events have been canceled for Beal City schools. The Boys' varsity and junior varsity basketball game against Ashley on January 24 was canceled because of bad road conditions caused by the snow.

“The majority of students live on dirt roads that don’t get ploughed very quickly,” Beal City resident Cecelia Straus said, “so canceling school is really the safest option for students.”

Some students were excited for the cancellations.

“I don’t know how many times school has been canceled already, but it’s happened quite a bit,” said Zachary Straus, Beal City senior.

He’s not letting the bad roads get in the way of his fun, though.

“I’m going to try to go snowmobiling, since I don’t have class,” he said.

Others might not be so excited about the cancellation.

The Beal City girls' varsity basketball team has a game Thursday night at 7:30 p.m., which could potentially be canceled if the weather persists, and the road conditions remain unsafe.
