SHS Homecoming Festivities

Homecoming is the time of year when a lot of excitement is being generated in the halls of Shepherd High School and their much-anticipated Pride Week has arrived.

Throughout the week leading up to the homecoming football game, students will dress up everyday based on different themes chosen by the student council.

This year’s humorous themes are “Fake an Injury” and “Fashion Disaster.” The other days include “College Apparel,” “Class Color,” and “Blue and Gold Day.”

The past month has been filled with meetings, deadlines and even physical labor amongst the classes.

“The students have been working really hard on their homecoming floats for a few weeks already,” said Douglas Bush, SHS principal.

There is a Mock Olympics class competition Thursday followed by hall decorating.

“Each class has a specific area to decorate based on an assigned theme,” Bush said.

A pep assembly will kick off Friday’s events, which will include the elementary and middle school students' participation.

“Classes receive points for their involvement in the ongoing activities," Bush said. “It makes it competitive.”

Faculty is involved during Pride Week by assisting as class advisors or chaperons for the dance.

“Some participate in the dress up days,” Bush said. “It’s a good time for everyone.”

The one Pride Week tradition SHS stopped doing is the girls’ powder puff game.

“The competition between the classes was so intense and emotions got so high surrounding the games,” Bush said. “We didn’t want anyone to get hurt.”

The homecoming parade on Friday will begin at 5 p.m., followed by the Blue Jays facing off against Chesaning at 7 p.m.

Shepherd’s homecoming court consists of three male and female seniors selected by their peers. The king and queen will be announced at the game’s halftime.

Saturday night will conclude the eventful week with the homecoming dance at the school’s gym.

“Everyone is really pretty good all week," Bush said. “We have a great student body and staff.”
