Many of us dread getting up for work but not Shepherd resident Kaye Peasley. Her relaxation time is few a far between but with her appreciation for music, she would not have it any other way.
Peasley ‘s love for music started when she was 11 years old. She toured with her church group, was a member of various community choirs, and sang in a festival chorus.
Peasley’s experiences were so positive that she became a director of church choirs and began teaching.
Since 1992, Peasley has been the choir director at Shepherd Middle and High School.
In addition to the voice lessons she provides during the school year, Peasley also offers piano lessons in the summer.
The most rewarding aspect of Peasley’s job is her students.
“I enjoy making an impact in their lives and helping them be responsible and successful adult citizens,” Peasley said. “Music is just the vehicle I use to help get them there.”
The tools she gives her students include accountability, commitment, dedication, discipline, team work, and listening skills.
There are 40 members in the high school’s mixed concert choir and 42 in the women’s chorus. The middle school has 124 students involved in Peasley’s choir classes.
Peasley’s choir groups perform at numerous events throughout the school year.
To name a few, they sing the Star Spangled Banner at sports games, compete at Solo and Ensemble, perform at the spring concert and parent recital, and sing at graduation.
This year Peasley has a fun-filled trip planned for her students. The itinerary includes singing at a senior citizen’s home in Detroit, a clinic with a college professor, attending a Broadway theater performance, singing on stage of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and topping it off at Cedar Point.
Students and chaperones all agree that the best part of every trip is the community service.
“Without a doubt, performing for senior citizens and children is a highlight for most students,” Peasley said.
They also spend time with the audience members and involve them by doing a sing- a-long. Some students even exchange emails and addresses to continue their newly established friendship.
“Music is a gift from God,” Peasley said.
